On Saturday, September 12, Acoma Plaza will be alive with the music and color of the 20th Annual Denver Art Museum Friendship Powwow & American Indian Cultural Celebration. The free event will begin at 10 a.m. with Gourd Dancing, followed by the grand entry at noon. Dance contests include categories ranging from tiny tot to adult.
Artmaking on the plaza will include animal painting and photo memories. Experience the sights and sounds of living traditions, connect with working artists and artisans, shop vendors for American Indian jewelry and other great items and enjoy your first (or 101st) piece of fry bread! Powwow activities and Museum admission are free.
Embrace! officially opens on November 14, but several artists are already working to transform the Hamilton Building with works of art created specifically for the dynamic spaces. Featuring 17 new works in a range of media, Embrace! marks one of the largest exhibitions of site-specific commissions in a U.S. museum, including never-before-seen works from Katharina Grosse, Shinique Smith, Matthew Brannon, Jessica Stockholder, Lawrence Weiner and Tobias Rehberger, among others. Denver’s Rick Dula currently is working on the second level of the Hamilton Building. Over the next two months, he will complete a huge painting that creates the illusion that viewers are peering into the interior structure of the building.
In mid-September, Katharina Grosse will begin her monumental spray-painting, which will cover a major wall of the Hamilton Building that rises from the first level to the fourth level. To prepare for her work, the wall must be draped and curtained off to contain the paint. Friday, September 11, through Monday, September 21, the main Hamilton entrance and the lobby will be closed to accommodate Grosse’s work, with the main access to the Museum moving to the North Building.
As Embrace! takes shape, visitors have the rare opportunity to see artists creating their artworks. Embrace! Insider Moments will be announced several days in advance on the Museum’s website calendar and Facebook page. In addition, the Museum’s installation team will send alerts via Twitter and the DAM’s e-newsletter, Art Mail. The first Insider Moment on August 20 featured a conversation with Rick Dula and the opportunity to watch Nicola Lopez working on her installation and ask her questions about the process. -- www.denverartmuseum.org
