Welsh Opera Presents No Strings

Welsh National Opera, Wales will present No Strings - the final songwriting project as part of Welsh National Opera's Street Songs programme of work across the South Wales valleys.

Based in Glenboi Primary School, Mountain Ash, Bristol based Writer Claire Williamson (The Merman King), will work with over 100 pupils at the school to write their own original songs and opera based upon their future hopes and dreams for their lives and the valley in which they live. Composer James Clarke will teach the pupils composition skills through the use of digital music production, and Soprano/Vocal Animateur Jenny Walker will coach a specially formed school chorus to perform the final piece.

Helyn Latimer from Puppet Theatre Wales will be joining the team to give the children a hands on experience of props and costume making through creating their own shadow and rod puppets which they will use to act out their mini opera. The final performance will be filmed by another group of pupils from the school, alongside Director/Editor Anne Gallagher (Surf Tailz) to create a lasting DVD of their work. A special premiere of the film will be held for staff, pupils, family and friends in the New Year 2010.

No Strings runs across the Autumn Term from Mid September to December 2009. A special screening of the film will also be held alongside puppet workshops as part of the free Street Songs Festival days to be held in Blaenavon on Saturday 26th June and Merthyr Tydfill on Saturday 3rd July 2010 - check back for more information soon.
