McCallum Theatre Announces Field Trip Series

The McCallum Theatre Institute (MTI) announces a magnificent season of Field Trip Series (FTS) performances. MTI's annual FTS presents eighteen performances from September 2009 through May 2010. The Institute invites local students and teachers to experience and engage with culturally diverse works in music, dance, and theatre. The series is offered at no cost thanks to substantial underwriting from individual donors, businesses, foundations and municipalities.

Featuring top artists from around the world, the season opens Monday September 14th, 2009, with renowned Virsky Ukrainian Dance Company. A kaleidoscope treat for both the eyes and ears, Virsky communicates Ukrainian culture with athleticism, humor, uninhibited joy and generates a thrill that is hard to beat. Travel to West Africa, Israel, Cuba, India and Spain in Big Drum/Small World. JazzReach's acclaimed Metta Quintet, returns to the McCallum with this globally themed multi-media program that celebrates the globalization of jazz and creative collaboration. Big Drum/SmallWorld aspires to illuminate how jazz continues to unite us and exemplify our increasingly interdependent world.

Active Arts Theater for Young Audiences invites the audience to the little Italian town of Calabria to meet Strega Nona. Based on the children's books by celebrated author/illustrator, Tomie dePaola, Strega Nona is the musical tale of a friendly magical Italian grandmother who is the source of potions, cures and magic. This fantastical tale teaches that witches can be good, and that you can't judge a pot by its pasta!

Enter the vivid fantasy world of Tolkien in Theatre Sans Fil's enchanting theatrical performance of The Hobbit. Forty-eight life-size puppets manipulated in the Japanese Bunraku style have created a highly successful adaptation that continues to receive standing ovations throughout the world. From fantasy to myth; from Glasgow Scotland, award winning Visible Fictions, one of the UK's leading theatre companies, presents a brand new version of an ancient Greek Myth in Jason and the Argonauts. Two actors, one hour, and one golden fleece set the stage for a great adventure of romance, destiny, heroism and revenge.

Return home to America; Brooklyn, New York, Ebbet's Field, before a crowd of 26,623 Americans, Jackie Robinson heroically breaks the "color" barrier for the National Baseball League and forever changes the world of sports! In celebration of the indomitable human spirit, Dallas Children's Theater presents the real life drama Most Valuable Player, the story of Jackie Robinson. A "grand slam" hit about a true American hero. Pay attention. Jamie Cavanaugh has a problem. She's different. She's going too fast. In the Incredible Speediness of Jamie Cavanaugh, Roseneath Theatre explores, with humor, insight and compassion the complexities that young people with ADHD experience. This remarkable play promotes greater empathy and understanding around learning disabilities among teachers and students.

The 2009-10 season dances it way to a close with Ballet Hispanico's Viva Las America's! With magnetic energy and vivacious choreography this company fuses Latin dance with elements of classical and contemporary forms to create a concert dance in which theatricality and passion propel every move. Explore community celebrations and special ceremonies specific to the different countries in Latin America. Before curtain call LehrerDance, under the direction of Jon Lehrer, keeps audiences enthralled and on the edge of their seats with the company's trademark, high-risk partnering and athletic ingenuity. This gravity defying group offers jazz, modern, gymnastics, break-dancing and circus style of movement that is simply breathtaking and repeatedly has audiences jumping to their feet in thunderous applause. Jon Lehrer is winner of the Grand Prize and Paid Engagement Awards at the 2008 Dance Under The Stars Choreography Festival.
