Sydney Opera House will play JONI - a tribute to the legendary Joni Mitchell - presented by Spiritworks and Jeff Lewis in association with the Melbourne International Arts Festival, taking place on 2009-10-30.
Few artists have shaped the landscape of popular music as much as Joni Mitchell. Her poetry, insight and originality have influenced so many others that contemporary song writing without her is unimaginable.
Now in the fifth decade of her recording career, Joni Mitchell continues to gather the highest accolades in popular music, including nine Grammy awards, entry to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Canada’s highest honour, the Companion of the Order of Canada.
Alongside these stellar achievements, the depth and imagination of this honest, elegant songwriter continues to inspire artists as diverse as Prince, Elvis Costello, Cat Power, Jeff Buckley, Alanis Morisette, Madonna, Maynard Jones Keenan (Tool), James Taylor, Herbie Hancock, Bjork and many others.
In this extraordinary concert tribute to this legendary artist, Katie Noonan, Wendy Matthews, Kristin Berardi, Tania Bowra, Louise Perryman, Virna Sanzone and Rachel Gaudry, together with an exceptional 12-piece band bring their own outstanding musicality to much of the best-loved material from Mitchell’s diverse career.
Joni classics such as Blue, Big Yellow Taxi, Both Sides Now, You Turn Me On I’m A Radio, Woodstock and Chelsea Morning will be presented in this heart-felt homage to an artist who Rolling Stone magazine described as “one of the greatest songwriters ever!”
Sure to please not only Joni fans but anyone who appreciates exquisitely crafted music, this concert will present the humanity of Joni’s art and the power of her ongoing relevance as a unique recording and visual artist. -- www.sydneyoperahouse.com
