Fort Worth Opera Stages Gaetano Donizetti

Fort Worth Opera will play "The Elixir of Love" by Gaetano Donizetti performed in Italian with projected English translations.

Premiering in 1832 in Milan, The Elixir of Love was an instant success, judging by its 33 performances in the season that it opened. Donizetti’s sparkling melodies make this romantic comedy, sometimes called the male Cinderella, a lively experience. And this production, set in early 20th century mid-western America, will take you on a nostalgic journey.

Performances will take place on May 23, 28 and June 5, 2010 at the Bass Performance Hall, Fort Worth.

Nemorino is too shy to tell Adina that he loves her, but Belcore boldly asks her to marry him. Nemorino gets some of Dulcamara's secret elixir (merely cheap wine in disguise) to help him woo the young beauty. When the elixir wears off, he can't afford to buy any more. Dulcamara tries to sell it to Adina instead, who then realizes that she doesn't need any elixir to make her love Nemorino. -- www.fwopera.org
