Fort Worth Opera will stage Hansel And Gretel by Engelbert Humperdinck sung in English playing on December 11 and 12, 2009, at the Rose marine theatre.

Based on the Grimm brothers’ fairy tale, Humperdinck’s Hansel and Gretel was first performed in Germany in 1893 and in London in 1894.

These performances, both done at Christmastime, began the tradition of staging the opera during the holiday season. Hansel and Gretel is Fort Worth Opera Studio’s special holiday presentation for families.

When the broom maker’s children are sent into the woods, they find more than berries. But the house made of cake and sugar is a terrible trap. Gretel must out-wit the witch to save her brother from becoming dinner and free them from the witch’s house. --
