Sydney Dance Company Performs At McCallum Theatre

The Sydney Dance Company is one of the most in- demand performing arts companies in Australia and an active proponent of Australian culture around the world. On Tuesday, March 6, they bring their newest work, Grand, to the stage of the McCallum Theatre at 8pm.

Led by Artistic Director and Choreographer, Graeme Murphy, Sydney Dance Company's repertoire has received international acclaim for its vivid theatricality and inventive choreography. The Sydney Morning Herald said, "Murphy proves that he is not only a pre-eminently ingenious choreographer, but also, in general terms, a genius of the theatre."

The Company has conducted over 25 international tours of Asia, North America, South America and Europe, performing to audiences in over 100 cities in over 20 countries.

Grand is Graeme Murphy's latest production and is a compelling collaboration exploring the dynamic relationship between dance and the piano. The iconic image of the piano is the driving force and inspiration behind Grand, as Murphy explores his passion for the piano through a journey into the heart of this remarkable instrument.

With design by artist Gerard Manion, lighting by Damien Cooper and costumes by renowned fashion designer, Akira Isogawa, Murphy has created a work that encompasses both the acoustic sound and visuals of the pianos internal workings. More than a mere merging of music and movement, Grand provides the medium for a dialogue between instrument and dancer. With concert pianist and recording artist Scott Davie, a chemistry is created between pianist and dancer, taking the audience on a journey into the fascinating repertoire of piano composition.

""¦Murphy clearly has an extraordinary talent - in addition to his gifts as a choreographer - of bringing together artists of various stripe who can meld dance, music, lighting, design and theatre into an unforgettable evening." The Times, New Orleans.

Sydney Dance Company is renowned for its repertoire of original works. Since Murphy began his directorship in 1976, the Company has presented over 140 new works. Their ensemble of 18 dancers is acclaimed internationally for their technical finesse and artistry.
