
For the first time the number of Internet users in the world exceeded one billion. The data is provided in the "Report Information Economy"Â issued by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD).
According to the document, 1 020 610 000 people had Internet access at the start oof the year. The number has increased with 19.5% as compared with last year.
The top three countries having the largest number of Internet users include the US (200 million), China (111 million) and Japan (85.29 million).
At the end of 2005 the number of the "world wide web"Â users in Russia was 21.8 million. With this index Russia is the 11th in the world and the 1st among CIS and Central European countries.
Russia is followed by Ukraine (4.5 million) and Belarus (3.39 million).
