Barnes & Noble (B&N) has the largest used-textbook inventory on the Web. These are sold through its Marketplace sellers, who are approved by Barnes & Noble. To find used textbooks, go to the Barnes & Noble website and search by title, author or ISBN to determine if it has a used version of the textbook you need. It is wise to check with your professor first to ensure you obtain the correct edition of the textbook. You may find out the edition does not matter; however, in some cases, it matters a great deal.
Barnes & Noble offers low prices, with some of its used textbooks listed at 90% off the sticker price. It also provides the highest-quality used books – no mildew stains, missing pages or pervasive underlining/highlighting. Even its lab manuals, study guides and workbooks are intact and are virtually scribble-free.
Barnes & Noble offers a return policy, which is very helpful when a student has to drop a class because it didn’t make (not enough students) or because the student decided that course was just not for him. Returns are accepted within 14 days of the date you received your order.
Students can also rent textbooks from Barnes & Noble. If you already know you do not need or want to keep the textbook for future classes, renting may be the right option for you. Its rental program allows you to choose how long you want to keep the book, so you don’t have to pay for it longer than you need it. B&N has thousands of textbooks available with rental periods up to 130 days. Extensions are available for either15, 30, 45, 60, 90 or 125 days or you may choose to purchase the book.
Students who rent textbooks must keep in mind that other students will likely be using that textbook after it is returned. Highlighting and writing in rented books should be very limited. Care should be taken to keep all pages intact. Books returned with excessive highlighting or writing, missing pages and/or damaged spines or covers will result in your being charged a replacement fee for the book.
Barnes & Noble also enables students to ship rented textbooks free by using its easy-to-use UPS shipping labels. Afraid you will lose the labels during the semester? Not to worry! You can find the UPS rental return shipping label in the “My Account” section of the B&N textbook site.
The return policy for rental books allows the student 21 days to return books in order to receive a full refund less the cost of shipping. If books are not returned on time, a 15-day extension is automatically added to the student’s rental fee. If books are not returned after that 15 day period, Barnes & Noble will convert your rental into a purchase by charging you the difference.
Prefer new textbooks? New textbooks at Barnes & Noble are discounted up to 30% off their sticker price. Additionally, B&N will provide free shipping for all new textbook orders totaling more than $25. New textbooks can be returned up to 14 days from the date you receive them. Books can be mailed with the original packing slip to an address the B&N textbook website will provide for you.
When it comes to the end of the semester, what do you do with those textbooks you bought, either used or new, and no longer need? If you bought them from Barnes & Noble, the company will buy them back from you – for cash!
