Teatro Kismet, in association with Liverpool Everyman and Playhouse, presents its magical production of The Snow Queen. This award-winning Italian theatre company, who last toured the UK with the critically acclaimed Beauty and the Beast in 2002, has a reputation for a highly physical and visual style of theatre appealing both to children and adult audiences.
Written and directed by Teresa Ludovico, The Snow Queen combines music, dance and beautiful aerial sequences in a wonderfully inventive and original telling of one of Hans Christian Andersen's most loved stories. Prepare to be enchanted when Teatro Kismet come to the Liverpool Playhouse from Tuesday 20 until Saturday 24 March 2007.
Gerda is robbed of her beloved friend Kay when his heart is frozen and he is taken prisoner by the beautiful icy Snow Queen. Afraid but determined she sets off on an heroic quest to rescue her friend, encountering fantastic creatures and overcoming dangers before finally confronting the terrifying force of the Snow Queen herself. For this battle she will need all the strength she can find in her heart.
Celebrating over 200 years of Hans Christian Andersen, this English speaking production of The Snow Queen is a highly entertaining show and will enchant, excite and move children but has a sophistication in its use of symbolism, imagery and the poetic text which address the deeper meanings of the tale and allow adults to appreciate the work on another level.
'Far too good just to leave to the children' (The Guardian)
In its 25 year history, Teatro Kismet has become one of Europe's leading practitioners of theatre for young audiences. The company employs a range of theatrical styles and techniques including aerial acrobatics, dance, martial arts, and bold caricature. The dramatic use of lighting, designed by Vincent Longuemare, and a highly evocative soundtrack (from Carmen to Tosca) help to create the intense atmosphere of the production.
The Snow Queen is a co-production with Athens Festival and was originally commissioned and produced by Setagaya Public Theatre, Tokyo. The UK tour, following an extensive tour of Italy and France, is produced by Liverpool Everyman and Playhouse and funded by Arts Council England, through its grants for the arts programme.
Gemma Bodinetz, Artistic Director, Everyman and Playhouse Theatres says: 'We are thrilled to be able to bring such an innovative and renowned theatre company as Teatro Kismet to the UK and to Liverpool in 2007 for it's 800th birthday and leading up to European Capital of Culture year. This continues our commitment to providing Liverpool audiences with the very best visiting companies and to attracting more children and young people to experience the magic of live theatre. We hope that this collaboration with Teatro Kismet is just the start of our work with leading theatre companies from around the world.' -- www.everymanplayhouse.com
