The Carolina was built in 1927 as a Vaudeville Theatre and Movie Palace for silent films. One year later, the Carolina became the first theatre in the state to install the new Vita- phone speakers, which placed the Carolina Theatre on the cutting edge of movie sound technology. Crowds flocked to see films five times daily; patrons had been used to seeing silent films, not hearing them. Since then, there have been tremendous improvements in movie sound.
Now, in 2007, the Carolina Theatre continues its strong commitment to its film heritage by providing the best quality sound possible. On March 13, 2007 at 7:30 PM, please visit the Carolina Theatre of Greensboro for the classic horror movie "Alien" and be a part of a significant event in history that may have the younger generations saying "I was there when "¦."Â
The installation of the sound system is complete due to the help of many organizations throughout the community. Through the kind generosity of local philanthropic organizations including, the Greensboro Area Convention and Visitors Bureau, the Tannenbaum-Sternberger Foundation, the Marion Stedman Covington Foundation, the Hillsdale Fund, the Future Fund, the Community Foundation of Greater Greensboro, and the United Arts Council of Greensboro, the Historic Carolina Theatre of Greensboro is able to grow with the rest of its community and provide a top notch entertainment venue for all to enjoy.
With the support of these wonderful organizations and an anonymous donation of $40,000, the Carolina will now present movies with pristine sound to strengthen the quality of our guests' experience. Projects like this provide the theatre an opportunity to preserve the nostalgia of its past while providing future generations the chance to create their own memories. -- www.carolinatheatre.com
