Park Jae-Myoung of Korea won a nail-biting, closely-fought men's javelin contest to claim his first major title. Park took the lead in the second round when threw 79.16m, and the 25 year-old further stretched his advantage when he recorded 79.30m in round three.

Japan's Yukifuni Murakami threw 78.15m in the second round but was unable to better that in the remainder of the competition with his sixth-round attempt of 74.75m confirming Park's gold medal.

The gold around his neck will give Park double reason to celebrate at the Closing Ceremony on 15 December, as it will be his birthday as well.

"I thought there'd be a 50 percent chance I'd win gold," said an ecstatic Park. "I performed my best to win gold. Now I feel like flying over the sky. I don't think I'll sleep tonight."

Li Rongxiang of China edged out his compatriot Chen Qi on countback for the bronze. Li threw 76.13m in the second round and Chen matched that with his last throw but Li's second-best throw of 75.96m proved decisive.

"This was not a normal performance for me because I was injured," said 34 year-old Li. "I hurt my knee one month ago and my teammate [Chen] hurt his shoulder, so this was a below average performance. All the competitors had an advantage over me because of their age."
