Yushchenko Hopes For EU Help With Power Struggle

Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko says he hopes the European Union will play a role in resolving his power struggle with Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovych.

The Ukrainian president made the comments after meeting EU foreign-policy chief Javier Solana in Brussels.

Yushchenko -- who is trying to move Ukraine closer to the West -- said the EU could play an "extremely important and large role" in resolving the conflict with the pro-Moscow Yanukovych. Yushchenko called the power struggle "a test."

Speaking after the same meeting, Solana said political and economic reform were essential for Ukraine's stability.

Solana said the EU wanted to deepen its relationship with Kyiv. But he stressed that Brussels wanted Ukraine's government to "be as stable and as constructive as possible."
