EU Summit to Debate Global Warming

Global warming and plans to sharply cut greenhouse gas emissions are expected to dominate a two-day European Union summit opening Thursday in Brussels.

EU environment ministers have proposed slashing emissions by 20 percent by 2020 and 30 percent if other industrialized nations and several developing economies join them.

The EU leaders are expected to debate just how individual members can meet that goal.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel, the summit host, says Europe can set a good example for the rest of the world. She said the EU still has enough time to fight global warming.

British Prime Minister Tony Blair is also expected to appeal to EU members who also belong to NATO to commit more money and troops to Afghanistan. - VOA News
