Libraries And Archives Council Welcomes Prime Minister Of Culture To Britain

Prime Minister Tony Blair's speech on the importance of arts and culture to Britain, given this morning at Tate Modern is welcomed by the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council (MLA), the lead strategic body for museums, libraries and archives.

There has been a transformation in England's regional museums, resulting from an investment of £150 million of government funding between 2003 and 2008 through our Renaissance programme. This ensures increased access for all; improved collections care and displays, as well as more and better-skilled museums staff. MLA looks forward to the programme continuing beyond 2008 so that our museums can be a core part of the Cultural Olympiad, showing the nation to the world and the world to the nation.

MLA is also very proud of the successes of the People's Network, a £250 million, large-scale IT project that was completed on time and on budget. There are now over 20,000 terminals providing free access to broadband in over 3,000 libraries. This is key to our ongoing vision for libraries as trusted community places, delivering high-quality services physically and digitally.

Each year two-thirds of the population visit museums, libraries and archives making them perfect places to build and sustain communities, where people can live, learn, work and thrive. We will work to continue this engagement and improve the infrastructure, buildings and services to benefit all users as well as the cultural sector itself. -- www.mla.gov.uk
