The United Nations' top torture investigator Manfred Nowak has discovered the worst violations of human rights he has ever seen in Nigerian police cells.
Manfred Nowak discovers that police beat, shoot suspects in legs, hang them from ceiling for long periods and he says that the neglect of injuries caused by torture worse than any he has ever seen.
In Lagos, Nowak found filthy, crowded room police called "torture room", but he found little evidence of torture in prison, except that detainees await trial for years.
These atrocities have been going on in Nigeria since the 1980s to date and even one of the victims lost an eye whilst being tortured and the police officers who blinded him were never charged for their crime and he was even lucky to have survived to tell the horrors and terrors of Nigerian police cells. Because, there were others who never survived.
Nigerian Police stations have horrid torture chambers where both innocent and criminal suspects are incapacitated, maimed or killed. And the Nigerian police have continued committing these crimes with audacity and impunity.
We hope the exposure of these crimes by Manfred Nowak will lead to the prosecution of these criminals in the Nigerian Police Force and make them to pay for the damages they have done to thousands of innocent people in Nigeria. And we want the investigations to cover the testimonies of the victims of police brutalities in Nigeria.
