Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has made a brief stop in Haiti at the end of a tour of Latin America and the Caribbean in which he harshly criticized President Bush, who also is visiting the region.
Thousands of people lined the streets of Haiti's capital, Port-au-Prince, Monday to greet the Venezuelan leader.
Mr. Chavez met his Haitian counterpart, Rene Preval, and promised more aid to help Haiti improve social services and power generation. Venezuela also exports oil to Haiti at preferential prices under a program called Petrocaribe.
Haiti's government is also a major recipient of U.S. aid.
Mr. Chavez traveled to Haiti from Jamaica, where he signed agreements Monday to supply the Caribbean nation with Venezuelan natural gas.
On Sunday, Mr. Chavez was in Nicaragua, where he met President Daniel Ortega and continued to criticize the Bush administration. Mr. Chavez accused the U.S. of trying to extinguish what he called "the flames of revolution" in Latin America. - VOA News
