Syracuse Symphony Hosts Deborah Henson-Conant

Deborah Henson-Conant, whose DVD and CD project, Invention & Alchemy has received a Grammy Award Nomination for Best Classical Crossover Album, is best known as an electric jazz harpist. But when she joins the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra to play a selection of hits from this work, the result is an intriguing and invigorating mix of musical styles--from blues to Latin to Celtic pieces.

Syracuse Symphony Orchestra Resident Conductor Grant Cooper will conduct this musical journey, which begins at 8:00 p.m. on March 16 and 17 in the Mulroy Civic Center at Oncenter.

Ms. Henson-Conant is known for creating performances that mix story and music, bridge musical styles and involve the audience to inject a theatrical atmosphere into a musical event. Her unique performance with the SSO, Tales and Travels, is part of the M&T Bank Pops Series, and is sponsored by Sutton Companies and KPMG with 570-WSYR as the media sponsor.

"While trained as a classical harpist, Ms. Henson-Conant has reinvented the harp, releasing it from its traditional role as an important textural sound in the orchestra to bring its sound and her wonderful personality front and center, right before the audience," said Grant Cooper, SSO Resident Conductor. "This Pops performance is sure to please traditional symphonic audiences while combining different elements of Deborah's less conventional harp style to thrill any lover of great music."

On Saturday, March 17, 2007 at 10:30 a.m., Mr. Cooper will also conduct the SSO and Ms. Henson-Conant in My Wild Irish Harp, the next concert in the Central New York Community Foundation Family Series, at the Mulroy Civic Center at Oncenter. This lively concert will be preceded by a FREE Bruegger's Bagels buffet for the audience and the popular and interactive Instrument Petting Zoo at 9:30 a.m. -- www.syracusesymphony.org
