Libraries And Archives Council Awards East Riding Children's Centre

The Campaign for Learning has today announced the winners of the 2006 'Best Family Learning Week Event' held in a museum and library, sponsored by the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council (MLA). The prestigious awards will be presented at the National Family Learning Week Conference at the QEII Conference Centre in London.

Natasha Innocent, Senior Policy Advisor, MLA said, "The MLA is delighted to have sponsored the two awards. We are proud to commend Birmingham Central Library and East Riding Children's Centre for their achievements in attracting a wide range of families into learning, and for providing creative resources and activities to support them. Through these awards the MLA recognises the importance of working with champions in the community to widen the reach of our service.

"Museums and libraries have a wealth of resources, skilled staff and activities that support learning outside the classroom. They play a critical part in family learning, which is essential for family bonding, well-being in the community and children's future success."

East Riding Children's Centre won their 'Best Family Learning Week Event in a Museum or Gallery' award for working in partnership with Sewerby Hall and Gardens. The event led families on a trail of discovery, where they could explore their environment through a range of creative activities. The families were encouraged to return to Sewerby Hall and continue to learn and discover as a family.

Commenting on their award, Leone Pavlidou, Events Officer at East Riding Children's Centre, said, "Through working in partnership with Sewerby Hall, the event introduced families to the resources on offer at museums and gave them the opportunity to participate in activities that encompass a range of learning and development skills."

Birmingham Central Library was awarded with the 'Best Families Love Libraries Event', held as part of the first ever national 'Families Love Libraries Day' in October. The spectacular free Space Trail event attracted over 15,000 visitors, and families were encouraged to take the trail around all seven floors of the library, where story telling, and other creative activities were offered. Birmingham Central Library was one of many libraries taking part on the day to attract families into the library, and to help raise awareness of the wide range of services libraries offer.

Yvonne Burt, Birmingham Central Library said, "This was the biggest Family Learning Event we have held at the library. Working with family learning providers in Birmingham City, we wanted to attract families into the library and introduce them to the extensive range of services we offer. This award makes all the hard work worthwhile."

Linda Siegle, Joint Chief Executive, Campaign for Learning said, "Family Learning Week can really make a difference in the community, bringing families together to learn in a welcoming environment. The activities provided by Birmingham Central Library and East Riding Children's Centre, and the excitement on the day was phenomenal." -- www.mla.gov.uk
