Alley Theatre Sponsors Book Drive

The Alley Theatre is sponsoring a book drive to benefit Literacy Advance of Houston during its production on Harper Lee's To Kill A Mockingbird. Patrons who bring adult and children's hardback and paperback books to the Alley Theatre between 9 a.m. and noon on Saturday, March 31 can buy two tickets to the Alley Theatre's 2:30 p.m. production of To Kill A Mockingbird that day.

The minimum price per ticket is $2, but patrons are encouraged to pay what they can. Patrons can drop off donations at the Alleyway (on Texas Ave., between Smith and Louisiana) and each household can purchase up to two tickets for a minimum of $2. Early birds are guaranteed tickets. The donated items will be distributed to Literacy Advance of Houston. Children's books and dictionaries are especially needed.

Set in fictional Maycomb, Alabama in the 1930s, To Kill a Mockingbird is the coming of age story of Jean Louise "Scout" Finch, the daughter of Atticus, a lawyer who, despite threats to himself and his family, defends a black man accused of assaulting a white woman.

The narrator of the story, a grown-up Scout, looks back at her childhood, delivering a powerful message about prejudice, injustice, and humanity.

To Kill a Mockingbird is generously sponsored by Honorary Producers Nanette and Jerry Finger. Supporting Sponsors: Baker Botts, L.L.P. and JPMorgan Chase. The Alley is supported by the Alley Theatre's 2006-2007 season sponsor Continental Airlines, the official airline of the Alley Theatre, and Season Producers, Mr. and Mrs. Meredith J. Long. -- www.alleytheatre.org
