Nitro Put Their Dancing Shoes On At Liverpool Playhouse Theatre

Nitro, Britain's leading Black Theatre Company, make a welcome return to the Playhouse Theatre this April with The Wedding Dance. This passionate story of aspiration and betrayal is underscored by the seductive rhythms of salsa music in Alex Wilson's specially commissioned composition. The Wedding Dance arrives at the Everyman as part of a nationwide tour from Tuesday 3 to Saturday 7 April.

Set in the intense, hot environment of London salsa clubs and the sensual surroundings of Havana, The Wedding Dance follows the journey of Cuban immigrant José, a magnificent dancer and modern-day Don Juan. Leaving his family and homeland, José arrives in London with his new English wife and little money. Neglecting his plans for medical school, he uses his talent for teaching the most passionate dance of them all - the salsa. An expert lothario, he surrounds himself with women who want to be with him and men who want to be like him. When he meets Miranda, innocent and already betrothed, he is faced with an irresistible challenge that proves to be one seduction too far"¦

Last seen at the Everyman with 2004's hugely successful Slamdunk, London-based theatre company Nitro is committed to commissioning, devising and producing new music theatre created and performed by black British artists. Written and directed by Artistic Director Felix Cross, the man behind Slamdunk, The Wedding Dance was inspired by the music of internationally renowned salsa composer Alex Wilson. His vibrant score, studio recorded by an 11-piece band, drives the production through a frenzy of impassioned dancing.

With a strong cast of 10, including former Eastenders star Troy Titus-Adams and dancers from Havana's National School of Dance, The Wedding Dance is a fast-paced celebration of the joy of salsa music and dance that will transform the Everyman Theatre into a sultry Cuban dance club. -- www.everymanplayhouse.com
