World Swimming Championships open in Melbourne

The 12th FINA World Swimming Championships got under way in Melbourne yesterday night with a gala opening ceremony at Rod Laver Arena.

Ian Thorpe graced the stage in Melbourne

Victorian Premier Steve Bracks was given the honour of officially opening the championships while two-time Olympic 1,500 metres freestyle gold medallist Grant Hackett and Australian water polo player Mel Rippon read the athletes' oath.

The now-retired Ian Thorpe also made an appearance during the festivities when he was recognised for his feats in the pool.

Competition at the championships began earlier on Saturday with the commencement of the synchronised swimming program. SOURCE: © 2007 Australian Broadcasting Corporation
