Whether it's your first time or your hundredth time, there is "no day but today"Â to see Victoria Theatre Association's presentation of RENT, on stage at the Benjamin and Marian Schuster Performing Arts Center, April 3 & 4.
Set in the East Village of New York City, RENT tells the moving story of life far from the "hip hooray"Â of Broadway. A gang of struggling artists share emotionally stirring experiences as they hustle their way through a life of disease, addictions and homelessness. With mixtures of fear and bravery, the young fall in love and learn to survive the harsh realities that surround them, emerging with hope for today and faith in tomorrow.
RENT first hit Broadway on April 29, 1996, and went on to win four Tony Awards®, a Pulitzer Prize®, and inspire a major motion picture. Based on Puccini's La Bohème, RENT is filled with breathtaking songs that take audiences through "five hundred, twenty-five thousand, six hundred moments so dear."Â
A decade of sellout performances and standing ovations has earned RENT praises like, "RENT is sensational! With a huge heart and a couple of ideas about young people finding connection in a disconnected time, this musical explodes with life,"Â from the Los Angeles Times. The New York Times says, "It shimmers with hope for the future of the American musical."Â
RENT was written by Jonathan Larson, who passed away unexpectedly just after the show's final dress rehearsal Off-Broadway on January 25, 1996. Immortalizing Larson's dreams of success, RENT continues its run on Broadway and is now the seventh longest-running show in Broadway history.
RENT features musical direction by Tim Weil, choreography by Marlies Yearby, set design by Paul Clay, costume design by Angela Wendt and lighting design by Blake Burba. This Victoria Theatre Association Star Attraction is presented with support from Leadership Sponsors Time Warner Cable and Dayton Daily News, as well as Performance Sponsor Radio One/Dayton.
RENT will be on stage at the Schuster Center for two nights, April 3 & 4, at 8 p.m. each night. Tickets for RENT are on sale now, starting at just $36, with discounts available for senior citizens, students and groups. -- www.victoriatheatre.com
