Bursting with west coast wit, Monksis a darkly uplifting story of redemption, where all are challenged to face their lives and find the peace they seek - a comedy of classic proportions where love and reconciliation triumph, at Royal Lyceum Theatre.
Three Glaswegians arrive on an Italian mountain, seeking out a fabled Monk with healing hands. Each of them has a story they want to put behind them "¦ they all have secrets they can't run away from "¦ but naebody said it wis gonnae be easy"¦!
Inspired by time spent with a Franciscan hermit, Des Dillon's hilarious new play has been three years in the making - with every second worth the wait. It follows the overnight success of his first play Six Black Candles, which premièred at the Lyceum in 2004.
We are delighted to welcome back Robin Laing (All My Sons, Mary Stuart), who will be making his third Lyceum appearance this season, playing Fabian - the monk with the self-imposed ball and chain. Peter Kelly (If Only), Stephen McCole (Blood Wedding, Romeo and Juliet, Citizens Theatre) and Paul Thomas Hickey (All My Sons) play the Glaswegians in search of salvation, alongside Frances Grey, Matthew Zajac and Joe Montana.
The creative team behind Six Black Candles has been reunited to produce Dillon's latest offering, with Lyceum Theatre artistic director Mark Thomson directing and Becky Minto designing. Lighting designer Jeanine Davies (Laurel and Hardy, Look Back in Anger) joins the team.
The performances will be through 7 April, 2007. -- www.lyceum.org.uk
