Maurice Hines To Perform At Palm Springs Art Museum

Director, actor, singer, dancer and choreographer Maurice Hines will perform as the featured entertainer for the Palm Springs Art Museum's Artists and Legends Gala on Sunday, March 24, 2007.

Mr. Hines' creative genius has impacted international stage, screen and television. Entertainment industry accolades and acknowledgements and commercial successes as a director, choreographer, producer and actor document his remarkable cultural career. At the age of five, Hines was performing on Broadway, resulting in appearances around the globe opening for such headliners as Lionel Hampton and Gypsy Rose Lee.

As part of Hines, Hines & Dad he performed to rave reviews and appeared on many shows, including The Pearl Bailey Show, Hollywood Palace and 35 appearances on The Tonight Show. Mr. Hines has starred in the national tour of Guys and Dolls, Bring Back Birdie (with Chita Rivera) and Sophisticated Ladies. He starred in the hit Broadway musical Eubie!; conceived, directed and choreographed the musical Uptown...It's Hot!; and created new shows such as Broadway Soul Jam. Mr. Hines co-directed and choreographed the national tour of Satchmo; directed, choreographed and starred in the national tour of Harlem Suite; and starred in the national tour of Jelly's Last Jam. Internationally, Mr. Hines has had the pleasure of directing and choreographing the musicals Havana Night in Cuba and an all-Latin version of The Red Shoes in the Dominican Republic. His film debut was Francis Ford Coppola's Cotton Club, and he's credited with directing and choreographing several music videos, including Quincy Jones' I'll Be Good to You.

Mr. Hines was the first African-American director for Radio City Music Hall's The Radio City Spectacular. He is currently in pre-production for the stage and film version of Yo' Alice, the new urban hip-hop fantasy.

The Artists and Legends Gala is presented by the Museum Associates Council of the Palm Springs Art Museum. This year's honorees are Frank Gehry, Dennis Hopper and Ed Ruscha. Tickets to this world-class event are $750 per person. -- www.psmuseum.org
