Palm Springs Art Museum Acquires Photographic Collage

The Palm Springs Art Museum is pleased to announce the acquisition of David Hockney's Grand Canyon South Rim with Rail, 1982.

The piece, a photographic collage that depicts the vastness and mystery of the much-loved American landmark, was purchased with funds provided by the Contemporary Art Council and unveiled as a surprise to guests at a recent acquisitions dinner. The piece will become part of the Art Museum's permanent collection.

Influenced by Thomas Moran and other epic painters of the Western American landscape in the 19th Century, David Hockney photographed the Grand Canyon in 1982.

The dazzling results, which are among the artist's most important and original contributions, foreshadow the widespread use of digital photography. Hockney has been intensely interested in the camera's effect upon our perception of the world. In the early 1980s he assembled into one image many compositions framed by the camera lens, transforming the fixed perspective of the single photograph into multiple viewpoints.
