Barclays' Statement on BBC TV programme - Whistleblower

We are aware that the BBC has conducted an undercover investigation in two of our branches and one call centre. We take all allegations of wrongdoing very seriously; however, although we have requested it we have not yet seen the programme.

Although this means that we are not in a position to comment in any detail, the integrity and honesty of our staff is hugely important to us - it is how we do business. We do not condone behaviour that breaks our policies and procedures. Our first action is always to gather the facts, but we take action where these substantiate improper behaviour.

In any organisation as large and complex as Barclays, there is a risk of isolated cases where things go wrong. When that happens our approach is to act fast and learn for the future. Our number one rule is that no customer suffers financial loss as the result of any wrongdoing by an employee. We have a zero tolerance attitude towards fraud, mis-selling or abuse of position for personal gain.

We are acutely aware that trust between ourselves and our customers is the bedrock on which we do business. We will do everything necessary to stamp out anything that undermines that trust.

That said, the vast majority of our 130,000 staff work extremely hard, day in and day out and really care about delivering a great service to their customers. - Barclays Press

#1 wary about becoming a barclays customer

I am actually with the woolwich who are being taken over by barclays's bank and i'm extremely concerned after seeing tonights programme on the hard sell tactics and then being given an additions account without actually wanting one. I do not like the way barclays does business and am seriously considering changing banks, and i have been with the woolwich for approximately 15 years.

#2 BARCLAYS

HOW ON EARTH CAN BARCLAYS ADMIT THAT THEY HAVE NOT SEEN THE PROGRAMME YET?
WITH SUCH SERIOUS ALLEGATIONS AGAINST THEIR STAFF, SURELY, THEY SHOULD BE MADE TO COMMENT ON THE FINDINGS AND STATE THEIR INTENTIONS.
ITS LAUGHABLE TO TALK ABOUT BEDROCK OF TRUST!

#3 barclays call centre

I worked at Barclays call centre in 2001. The BBC programme was a true reflection of what goes on. We were pressurised to open new accounts for customers and sell them loans. We were given targets each morning (in a 'buzz' meeting!!) and were made to feel useless and humiliated if we had not achieved this by the end of the shift.Sometimes If a teamleader was listening to the call they would tell you to put the customer on hold, they would then tell you what to say to the customer to try and get a sale, then continue listening while you repeated it. I left after 2 months (I had no other job to go to) as I found myself going home each evening full of guilt

#4 They´re leeches, but I

They´re leeches, but I guess thats the way things works nowadays, sad but true.

#5 Boiler Room

Has anyone seen the movie Boiler Room with Vin Diesel and Ben Afleck? Barclays may not be as exteme as this, but maybe a few senior managers watched this movie and decided to implement a new programme at Barlcays! At the end of the day we are seeing more and more of the dark side of capitalism - high peformance is measured purely by financial profit. Things will only get worse and more pervaisive in the society we are developing.

#6 I was working for Barclays

I was working for Barclays Spain and aside from this type of subjects, in a place where the sexual harassment labor and relations are tolerated and habitual, this is not strange
