China takes gold in 10-metre springboard

China's Wang Xin has taken the gold medal in the 10-metre platform at the World Swimming Championships in Melbourne. Wang's team-mate, Chen Ruolin, won the silver, while Germany's Christin Steuer won bronze. Australia's Melissa Wu was placed 11th.

The 14-year-old qualified fourth for tonight's final but could not find the consistency needed for a medal.

She was placed fifth after her second dive but her fourth dive, a back three-and-a-half somersault was poor, attracting a score of only 28.04 points.

China has so far dominated the diving, winning every gold medal on offer.

Wang won gold in her first major international competition with a nerveless display, her more consistent series of dives earning her a healthy advantage over Chen, who won 10-metre synchro gold on Monday.

Chen led after two rounds but a woeful over-rotation in round three cost her dearly, and despite a fourth-round effort that netted six perfect scores, she could not catch Wang.

Wang won with a combined tally of 432.85 points ahead of Chen with 410.30 and Steuer in third with 386.85.
