Beautiful Retirement Communities Just Outside New York City

For many New Yorkers, retiring in the South and Florida is a good way to avoid the cold weather, and to lower living costs. However, many New Yorkers are not used to the weather and pace of live in the South, even during retirement. For those who want to retire in the Northeast, but do not want to spend city living prices, there are many retirement communities in the surrounding areas that are the best of both worlds.

The follow communities are around one hour commute from New York City, but are located in lush suburban or rural areas. There are mountains and plenty of hiking trails, farms and wineries. But shopping and other conveniences are not too far away. There are also quaint towns with main street and cute shopping, often within walking distance from the communities.

In the beautiful Orange County, New York, there are two newer active adult 55+ communities.

A luxurious development, Warwick Grove, is built to be a walkable, traditional Norman Rockwell style neighborhood. There are condos, townhomes and 165 single family homes being built in this community. is walkable to downtown Warwick through a scenic park, where the downtown streets include lots of dining, shops, independent bookstore, and more. The town of Warwick offers a scenic setting, with lots of farms and wineries nearby.

Another development, The Kensington Station, is a collection of 130 single family homes for 55+ active adults. Kensington Station is located in the Town of Woodbury, New York. It is conveniently located close to the popular Woodbury Commons outlets, and lots of large stores. Nearby you will find lots of hiking and outdoor opportunities at Bear Mountain, Harriman State Park and a popular trails for jogging and biking.
