Everything's Coming Up Roses At Brooklyn Botanic Garden

What could be more romantic and sensuous than a single rose? How about tens of thousands of them? Delight the senses with a multitude of blooming roses during June Is Rose Month, a celebration honoring the beauty and history of the rose at Brooklyn Botanic Garden's Cranford Rose Garden. Kick off this monthlong homage to America's favorite flower with Jazz and Roses on Sunday, June 3, Noon-5:30 p.m.

A stroll through the Cranford Rose Garden will kindle old memories and help make new ones: romance abounds in one of the most diverse rose collections in the country. Throughout the month of June, special guided tours are free with Garden admission on Saturdays and Sundays at 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. The Guided Garden Tour is 3:00 p.m., the Seasonal Highlights Guided Tour is 1 p.m., or visitors can stroll the garden at their leisure with a self-guided tour.

The Cranford Rose Garden is home to more than 5,000 rosebushes and nearly 1,200 different Rosa species and hybrids. The collection includes varieties chosen by All-America Rose Selections (AARS), wild species, old garden roses, hybrid teas, grandifloras, climbers, ramblers, and miniatures. In early summer, tens of thousands of roses cascade down arches, climb up lattices, clamber over the pavilion, and pose in formal beds. Brooklyn Botanic Garden's Cranford Rose Garden preserves the rich and vast legacy of the rose, as modern hybrids thrive alongside old garden ancestors.

June Is Rose Month celebrates the timeless beauty and endless fascination with the rose beyond the Cranford Rose Garden, too. The Garden Shop and Gift Shop features "Everything Roses," a special collection of rose-themed merchandise for rose lovers of all ages. Drawing inspiration from the original intention of the Cranford Rose Garden to educate visitors about roses, BBG offers rose-themed classes, programs, and activities for the whole family during June Is Rose Month.

For over 75 years, the Cranford Rose Garden itself has been a living classroom, enlightening visitors about the history, development, and care of the rose. Visitors can also see that roses will flourish in any region of the United States, for here over a thousand varieties thrive in the polluted air of a city with hot and humid summers and harsh winters. The Cranford Rose Garden is meant to encourage and inspire Americans to choose roses appropriate to their own gardens. -- www.bbg.org
