Cervical cancer hope for developing world

The Australian scientist who developed the world's first cervical cancer vaccine is now focusing on the disease in the developing world.

Dr Ian Frazer won the 2006 Australian of the Year award for the vaccine, which is being rolled out across the country to pre-teenage girls.

Dr Frazer is in Hobart for the annual Australasian Society of Infectious Diseases conference and says he is turning his attention to the prevalence of cervical cancer in the developing world.

"Cervical cancer is predominantly a disease of the developing world," he said.

"We're doing this study, a pilot study if you like, in Vanuatu, as a developing world country, to see if we can work out ways to get around the problems of delivering vaccines in the developing world." SOURCE: © 2007 Australian Broadcasting Corporation
