China, Russia plan Mars mission

China and Russia are set to launch a joint unmanned mission to Mars in two years' time. In 2009 China and Russia will launch an unmanned mission to explore Mars and one of its moons.

A Russian rocket will carry a Chinese satellite to survey the planet and a Russian exploration vehicle will land on the largest of its moons.

The announcement coincides with Chinese President Hu Jintao's visit to Moscow.

China's expanding space program is seen as a sign of its growth as a world power.
