EU, China to launch partnership agreement

European Commission Vice-President Günter Verheugen, responsible for enterprise and industry policy, will be visiting Beijing from 01 - 04 of April to deepen the EU-China economic relations.

The visit of Mr. Verheugen follows the publication of the Commission communication on the EU-China relations at the end of last year. In January 2007 both sides agreed to launch negotiations on the establishment of a new Partnership and Cooperation Agreement.

In this framework, one of the objectives will be to discuss with the Chinese leadership on how to strengthen and improve communication between the Commission and the Chinese Government. Mr. Verheugen will meet during his visit with high-ranking Chinese political and government leaders.

During the visit, Vice President Verheugen will discuss among others the common challenges of energy efficiency and climate change; the development of existing cooperation on regulatory issues, economy and technology and consumer protection and safety.

With regards to energy efficiency the Vice-President will offer to share EU experience on technical standards and energy performance in buildings. Furthermore an exchange of views will take place on the development of the shipbuilding industry. Overall the Vice-President will convey to his Chinese interlocutors the message that the EU and China have much to gain by working together on sustainable development. - European Union
