NATO Council To Hold Kosovo Talks

Members of NATO's North Atlantic Council are due to hold talks with officials in Kosovo today. The North Atlantic Council is NATO's senior decision-making body, comprising the permanent representatives of the alliance's 26 member states and chaired by Secretary-General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer.

NATO has been leading an international peacekeeping operation in Kosovo in support of international efforts to build peace and stability in the province since June 1999, when it led a bombing campaign to halt a Serbian government crackdown against ethnic Albanian rebels.

The NATO visit comes as the UN Security Council is expected on April 3 to start debating the plan for the disputed Serbian province's future status that has been proposed by UN envoy Martti Ahtisaari.

Both Serbia and leaders of Kosovo's ethnic Albanian majority say Ahtisaari's proposal could lead to Kosovo's independence from Serbia -- an outcome rejected by Serbia but supported by the ethnic Albanians.
