New medicine helps treat drug-resistant HIV

A new drug is giving hope to patients with HIV who have become resistant to other treatments. Researchers including a team from Australia gave patients either an older HIV drug on its own or combined with a newer medication called darunavir.

It found more than half of those taking the new drug saw a 10-fold drop in the amount of HIV in their blood.

Professor David Cooper from the National Centre for HIV epidemiology says the drugs are life-changing for patients who have become resistant to older treatments.
