Zimbabwe's Bishops Pressure Government for Democratic Reforms

Roman Catholic bishops in Zimbabwe have warned President Robert Mugabe's Government there will be a revolt unless it agrees to democratic reforms. In an open letter, the bishops say the confrontation in Zimbabwe has reached a flashpoint.

They want a new constitution to guide a democratic leadership chosen in free and fair elections.

But Zimbabwe's Information Minister, Sikhanyiso Ndlovu, says the church is focussing on the wrong target.

"This is a free country, therefore our churches are free to say what they would like," he said.

"We respect their opinion but we are saying could they also look at the role played by Britain and America on sanctions in Zimbabwe and making our people suffer."

Mr Mugabe's Government drew furious protests from Western nations last month after Zimbabwe police arrested Opposition Leader Morgan Tsvingarai.

Mr Tsvingarai and other opposition members were severely beaten in police custody.
