Fish market fined for seafood rip-offs

One of the biggest fish retailers in the Illawarra, in southern New South Wales, has been caught ripping off consumers by replacing local seafood with a cheaper imported product. The Shellharbour Square Fish Market has been found guilty in the Industrial Magistrates Court of seven breaches of the Food Act.

The retailer was prosecuted on four charges of not displaying the country of origin of prawn meat, baby octopus, basa and vannemei, and three counts of falsely selling inferior quality tilapia as bream fillets.

Shellharbour Square Fish Market was fined $12,000 and ordered to pay nearly $5,000 in court costs.
