Gates, Olmert Discuss Iran's Nuclear Program

Israeli officials say Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and the visiting U.S. Defense Secretary, Robert Gates, have discussed the Iranian nuclear issue. Gates is in Israel on the last leg of a Mideast tour, discussing Iran's nuclear program, the situation in Iraq and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

On Wednesday, Gates said Washington favors diplomatic efforts to isolate Iran for its nuclear program. He said the two U.N. Security Council resolutions against Iran should be given a chance to work.

The Security Council imposed sanctions on Tehran for its refusal to stop enriching uranium.

The United States and its allies have accused Iran of trying to develop nuclear weapons. Iran says its nuclear program is for the peaceful production of energy.

Defense Secretary Gates met with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak in Cairo on Wednesday. Gates says he used the talks to urge Egypt to help secure Iraq.

Earlier, he held talks with Jordan's King Abdullah on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. - VOA News
