The Role of the United States: Resluts of the Survey

Most Armenians think the United States should do its share in efforts to solve international problems.

The issue of the Chicago Council on World Affairs survey in 18 countries with 56 percent of the population of the world was the international engagement of the United States. Armenia is one of the countries where the poll was conducted, where the Chicago Council collaborated with the Armenian Center for National and International Studies. On April 19 the ACNIS released the results of the survey which suggest that most Armenians think the United States should do its share in efforts to solve international problems together with other countries. 58 percent of Armenian citizens think so. 27 percent of Armenians think the United States should stop being the dominant power. 7 percent think the United States should continue to be the preeminent leader in solving world problems.

63 percent of the citizens of Armenia think the United States too often plays the role of world policeman. 27 percent hold the opposite opinion. 58 percent of Armenians do not trust the United States as a preeminent leader, 39 percent do. 37 percent of respondents say the U.S. should reduce its overseas bases, 26 percent think it should keep its military bases, and yet 16 percent think the United States should setup more military bases.

As to the bilateral relation, 48 percent of Armenians think it is improving, 40 percent think it remains the same, and 8 percent think it is aggravating.

On comparing the results of the poll in Armenia with the results of the other 17 countries we may conclude that the opinion of the Armenians on the world superiority of the United States does not differ essentially from the public opinion in other continents. The majority wants the United States to solve international problems together with other countries.

In Europe 75 percent of the French hold this opinion, in Ukraine 52 percent. In the Asian countries 79 percent in South Korea and 68 percent in Chine are for this. In Russia only 42 percent of respondents think so. -Source: http://www.lragir.am
