The Alley Theatre is currently accepting submissions for the Houston Young Playwrights Exchange. HYPE is a new-play development program for teenagers in the Houston area. Participants must be between the age of 13 and 19 on the submission deadline. Submission must be in the form of a one-act play that is no more than 30 minutes long when read aloud and that requires no more than six actors.
Deadline for Submissions is April 27, 2007.
One of the Alley's Education and Community Engagement Department's premier programs, HYPE has helped over 50 young playwrights develop their work since the program was started in 1996. Selected playwrights will receive a stipend and the chance to participate in a six-week professional theatre workshop to sharpen their playwriting skills and develop their scripts with the help of Alley Theatre staff. HYPE culminates in public readings of the playwrights' work on the Alley's Neuhaus Stage.
Six playwrights are chosen for the six-week HYPE institute. Each playwright is paired with a dramaturg who helps guide him/her through the play development process. HYPE workshops will take place during the summer of 2007.
The first week of HYPE is a series of playwriting master classes with playwright C. Denby Swanson. C. Denby Swanson is a graduate of Smith College, the National Theatre Institute, and the University of Texas Michener Center for Writers. She has been a William Inge Playwright in Residence, a Jerome Fellow and a McKnight Advancement Grant recipient. She is a Core member of The Playwrights Center in Minneapolis, an alumna of the Lark Theater's Playwrights Week 2005, the Artistic Director of Austin Script Works, and on the faculty at Southwestern University. -- www.alleytheatre.org
