Judges Deliberate World Chambers Competition Entries

The 2007 World Chambers Competition has attracted a record number of entries with many chambers vying for a chance to take home a prestigious award.

With the submission date for the third edition of the competition now passed, judges from transnational, national, regional and local chambers are currently poring through the submissions to select the finalists who will be announced on the week commencing 17 May. Finalists will present their projects to the international judging panel at the Fifth World Chamber Congress in Istanbul from 4-6 July 2007.

Over 55 entries from 38 countries have been received resulting in the competition being the most diverse in its history. As in previous competitions, the Best Unconventional Project for Small- and Medium-sized Enterprises (SME) was the most popular category drawing more dossiers than all of the other categories combined.

Recognizing initiatives by chambers around the world to boost the growth of business in the local community, the 2007 competition will showcase the achievements of chambers in the following categories:

Best Unconventional Project for SME's

Best International Cooperation between Chambers

Best Skills Development Programme

Best New Membership Recruitment Project

This year sees the inclusion of a special recognition award for Best Project from a Chamber of a Developing Country. This award will recognize an exceptional project from within the group of applicants, demonstrating achievement and success in a challenging business environment.

The competition which has become a highlight of the congress, has received projects covering a wide variety of subjects, with entries coming in from the UK to Brazil, Jordan to the Philippines. The Pathways to Skills Transfer project in Bedfordshire, (UK) is ensuring that migrant workers have the qualifications and skills needed to work in the UK and providing the right training if not. This has been achieved by working with nine partners in several countries.

The Paranaque Chamber of Commerce and Industry in the Philippines is joining with the local community to save the Paranaque River and restore it to its natural state while the Eastern Province Chamber of Commerce and Industry is mobilizing businesswomen in Saudi Arabia.

The Iraq American Chamber of Commerce and Industry is training businesses on practices such as language and communications skills which have become essential to conducting business in the world today and which ensure that they can stand on equal footing with international counterparts.
