Advani to be PM candidate in India "after" Vajpayee

Apparently sticking to the seniority rule in India, BJP chief Rajnath Singh has said his predecessor L K Advani would be the party's candidate for the Prime Minister's post "after" Atal Bihari Vajpayee as he ruled himself out of the race for the top job.

"Why after Atal...? It will be only Advani after Atal. He will be the natural choice. Only he should become the Prime Minister. This is the law of nature, which Rajnath cannot fight with," Rajnath told a news channel.

The BJP chief, however, parried the question regarding the party's choice for the post of next President.

"Let the elections in Uttar Pradesh get over first. A meeting of the party's parliamentary board will be called (to decide on the matter)," he said when asked whether the BJP would prefer a second term for President A P J Abdul Kalam.

Asked about his comments on the fake encounter case of Gujarat, Rajnath said he believed the state government would do no wrong.

Rajnath, also praised Chief Minister Narendra Modi for developing Gujarat as a "model" state. DDNews India
