The UK Autism Foundation has urged Prime Minister Gordon Brown and Chancellor Alistair Darling to increase the tax credits, the disability living allowance and the carer's allowance in order to help families with autism below the poverty line.
The UKAF has also urged the Chancellor to stop the re-possessions of homes where there are children with autism. The appeal was supported by Baroness Uddin of the House of Lords who released a statement asking for house re-possessions to be stopped. Lady Uddin also backed the call for an increase in benefits for the poor.
Further support came from the Patron of the UK Autism Foundation, Lee Scott MP for Ilford North who was recently shortlisted for the ePolitix Disability Champion Award for 2008. Lee Scott also spoke about the harrowing experiences of families with autism in Redbridge in a recent debate on housing in the House of Commons in the Palace of Westminster. He has called for greater help for families with autism. Many are struggling as a result of the economic downturn.
Chancellor Alistair Darling will make a statement on Monday 24th November in the House of Commons.
