Microsoft, SanDisk To Develop Smart Memory Cards

Software developing company Microsoft and peripherals manufacturer SanDisk announced their partnership to develop a totally new smart memory card. The new card will enable mobile computer users to carry their desktop interface in their pockets, including files and applications.

Flash memory cards developed by SanDisk now can carry users' files, but the new cards will also carry users' desktop interface as is. User will only need to plug the small flash device into Universal Serial Bus and the computer will turn into user's desktop with all its settings, applications.

SanDisk is responsible for hardware technology and Microsoft is responsible for software. The new memory card will be available in the mid of 2008.

"The effort will elevate simple flash storage to a whole new level of customer benefit," said Will Poole, corporate VP for Microsoft's Market Expansion Group. Microsoft will try to involve third party hardware manufacturers in this project.

After release of this new memory card SanDisk will phase out its U3 technology, and software developers will be offered to adjust existing software to the new technology. Microsoft will add support for the new memory card to Windows XP and Windows Vista operating systems.
