Said MPAA chair Dan Glickman: "Clearly, smoking is increasingly an unacceptable behaviour in our society. ... No parent wants their child to take up the habit. The appropriate response of the rating system is to give more information to parents on this issue.''
MPAA's aim is to help parents to decide what movies their kids are allowed to watch. But this is not the only rating system for parents: they can also go to Google's "movie parents rating" page, where parents make their own notes of movies.
"The MPAA film rating system has existed for nearly 40 years as an educational tool for parents to assist them in making decisions about what movies are appropriate for their children," Glickman said. "It is a system that is designed to evolve alongside modern parental concerns."
MPAA's announcement is being applauded by different organizations. Directors Guild of America said this is a real help for parents to make aright choice for their kids. Screen Actors Guild also said, that this is an important step to help protect our health. American Cancer Society said this new rating will keep parents and children away from diseases and deaths caused by tobacco.
But not all comments were positive. American Legacy Foundation said: "MPAA falls short and fails to implement the meaningful recommendations set forth by numerous organizations"Â.
MPAA's rating will be based on the following question:
- Is the smoking pervasive?
- Does the film glamorize smoking?
- Is there a historic or other mitigating context?
If yes, then the movie will be R rated.
What I think, is that it is very easy to make smokers quit: governments of all countries can just forbid selling cigarettes, and all smokers will quit immediately.
