Ruby is an open source object-oriented programming language and Rails is a framework for developing applications with Ruby. Ruby on Rails has become one of the favorite languages for web application developers. CodeGear's challenge is to make Ruby on Rails better for developers, and so it is more application-focused and it fully supports the whole Ruby on Rails framework, not only the Ruby language.
"We really believe that Ruby on Rails has the potential to be an alternative to Java in the enterprise sense," Michael Swindell, vice president of products and strategy at CodeGear. "We want to build tools that will be well-suited for development teams building long-lived applications with the Ruby language and the Ruby on Rails framework."
CodeGear' IDE for Ruby on Rails enables both command line control development, and full visual development environment. Developers will spend less time on writing the code and will enjoy the ready programs for a long time. Since the inner working applications are hidden, developers need less time and efforts to write the desired software.
"Our goal is to let developers benefit from Ruby on Rails, but let them understand what's happening in the application," Swindell said. "There is a lot of opportunity here for scalability in Ruby on Rails, and it actually has a lot of the features that Java shops have been asking for, they want an easier Java than Java."
Software development languages are being upgraded very strongly to make developers' lives easier: Sun Microsystems launches new JavaFX Script, Microsoft extends its .Net Framework with Dynamic Languages Runtime, and now it is time for Ruby on Rails.
This summer only a few private users will have new IDE for Ruby on Rails, and this autumn it will be provided for general availability.
