Three of Australia's top universities have formed an alliance to take the lead on climate change research in Australia. Victoria's Monash University, the University of New South Wales and the Australian National University in Canberra have formed the alliance.
Professor Andy Pittman from the University of New South Wales says it means the universities will no longer compete for funding for research on global warming.
"These are basically the three universities with the largest scale of research on climate science in Australia," he said.
"It's a recognition, I think, that individual universities can't compete any more on the climate science challenges that confront Australia.
"We're looking at a consortium to share expertise, intellectual property and strategies."
