Grand Ghost Tours have been a success at Blackpool's Grand Theatre since Hallowe'en 2006; now Stephen Mercer, who instigated the tours, has decided to organise further tours at other properties and venues around the Blackpool area. "There has been a phenomenal response to the Grand Ghost Tours and Overnight Vigils held at the theatre and they will continue for as long as people want to go on them, and judging by the amount of phone calls and emails we are receiving, that won't be any time soon! However, there are many other properties in and around Blackpool that have a history of hauntings and recorded paranormal phenomena, such as Blackpool Zoo, North Pier Theatre, The Opera House and Tussauds Waxworks to name but a few. It is fantastic that I can now take Grand Ghost Tours to them."Â
Blackpool Zoo will be the location for the first Grand Ghost Tour not at the Grand Theatre. The zoo, which opened on 6 July 1972, has quite a history of paranormal activities occurring; and that is not surprising when you look at the background of the buildings and the land it was built on!
It was constructed on the former site of the original Blackpool Municipal Aerodrome, which was built in 1929 and opened in 1931. The aerodrome became the Stanley Park Aerodrome In 1939 and when World War II broke out, on 3 September of that year, the RAF requisitioned the aerodrome. Originally there was an air traffic control building and one hangar, however an additional four hangars were built where Wellington bombers were assembled and flown from during the war years. When the war finished the aerodrome closed and was never used for flying again.
Della Belk, Business Development Manager at Blackpool Zoo and Dinosaur Safari said, "Many of the original aerodrome buildings and hangers are still standing; the A-Zoo nursery and keepers flats are housed in the old air traffic control building with the hangars being used to house the elephants, for food storage, quarantine and maintenance of the zoo site itself. It is going to be an amazing event and we are pleased that Grand Ghost Tours chose Blackpool Zoo for its first location away from the Grand Theatre."Â
"It is those zoo buildings that Grand Ghost Tours will be focusing on,"Â added Stephen. "To be able to go into Blackpool Zoo is fantastic and I thank Della and her colleagues for their support and assistance. I would advise anyone interested in going on this tour to book now, as it is sure to follow in the way of our previous tours and sell out within hours. For those who get to go on the tour, remember to bring a torch, it will be very dark!"Â -- www.blackpoolgrand.co.uk
