Autism: Alan Johnson urged to use Stephen Wiltshire as a Positive Role Model

Autism campaigner Ivan Corea has called on the Secretary of State for Education Alan Johnson and the Department for Education and Skills (DfES) to use Stephen Wiltshire as a positive role model for all young people. Stephen Wiltshire is a leading international architectural artist who has been diagnosed with autism.

'I urge Alan Johnson to use Stephen Wiltshire as a positive role model in any future DfES education campaign. He is a classic example of a man with autism who has climbed the top of his profession as an architectural artist, despite the barriers and the label.Stephen Wiltshire is an example to us all,' said Ivan Corea in London.

Mr.Corea heads the Autism Awareness Campaign UK established in 2000, aimed at lobbying for better public services for all people with autism and Asperger's Syndrome in the United Kingdom. He recently met the Prime Minister in the House of Commons together with his MP, Lee Scott (Ilford North). The campaigners presented Prime Minister Tony Blair with the Autism Report calling for a cohesive national strategy on autism and a 10 year plan of action to help parents, carers and people with autism and Asperger's Syndrome. Parliamentarians of all parties are currently signing an important early day motion on autism - EDM 1359 in the House of Commons supporting the call of the Autism Awareness Campaign UK for a national strategy on autism. Ivan Corea also met with Secretary of State for Education Alan Johnson earlier this year.

A stunning print of the Palace of Westminster drawn by the multi-talented Stephen Wiltshire was recently presented to Lee Scott MP in Parliament - Scott has championed the cause of autism. He initiated a key debate on the issue in Westminster Hall in March 2007. It is now regarded as one of the most important debates on autism in Westminster.

Stephen Wiltshire was born in London to West Indian parents on 24th April, 1974. He is the only artistic autistic savant in the world whose work has been recorded and published since his childhood.
