
Iraqi police say a car bomb explosion has killed at least 25 people in a crowded market in Baghdad Tuesday. Officials say about 60 others were wounded in the blast in the mostly Shi'ite Amil district in southwestern Baghdad.
In northern Baghdad, gunmen fired on a mini-bus carrying college students, killing eight. A mortar attack on a college in the capital killed at least three other students.
Elsewhere in Baghdad, a roadside bomb blast near a police station, in eastern Zayouna district, killed one person and wounded three others.
Meanwhile, the U.S. military says coalition forces detained 15 al-Qaida suspects during raids in Iraq today, and freed 12 Iraqi hostages held near the town of Karmah.
On Monday, President Bush phoned Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki to urge him to move forward with reconciliation initiatives.
A White House spokesman, Tony Fratto, says Mr. Maliki stressed his commitment to national reconciliation. The spokesman says Mr. Bush also reaffirmed U.S. support for Prime Minister Maliki - one year after he took office.
Mr. Bush is facing impatience in the U.S. Congress about the war in Iraq and the lack of progress in resolving Iraq's sectarian divisions. - VOA News
